Weeding. Some people hate it, some people love it. I happen to love it. For me there's nothing that de-stresses me quite like muttering about my problems under my breath while yanking on a stubborn weed until-- POP!-- it snaps out of the soil and more likely than not, I fly sprawling backwards with it still in my fists. Whether I'm weeding or not, the garden provides me with a space to think, to pray, and to move my body, which always improves my head space as well. But, did you know that science has shown there is more to the garden than meets the eye, and there's a biological reason it tends to balance our brains? There are a plethora of studies you can read about, but Gardening Know How breaks them down the simplest: "Did you know that there’s a natural antidepressant in soil? It’s true. Mycobacterium vaccae is the substance under study and has indeed been found to mirror the effect on neurons that drugs like Prozac provide. The bacterium is found in soil and may stimulate serotonin production, which makes you relaxed and happier." (Bonnie L. Grant, gardeningknowhow.com)
